Art and Design

At Meadowhead Infant and Nursery School, Art and Design is an integral part of our curriculum. We believe that Art and Design should inspire creativity, curiosity and self-expression. We provide children with opportunities to explore, experiment and develop artistic skills through a range of creative experiences. By introducing children to a variety of artists, materials and the local community, we build cultural capital and foster a lifelong appreciation of art.
Children experience a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that develops skills in drawing, painting, collage, textiles and sculpture. Subject-specific vocabulary and key knowledge are explicitly taught throughout each unit, while staff ensure a clear progression in the elements of art, including line, tone, texture, colour, shape and pattern. Children are introduced to the work of artists from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds, helping them to broaden their understanding of the world.
Children are encouraged to reflect on, evaluate and celebrate their own work and the work of others. Through high-quality teaching and support, all pupils are enabled to achieve their full potential. Art provides many children, particularly those with SEND, with opportunities to experience success, develop confidence and raise self-esteem. By the end of Year 2, children have developed the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm needed to continue their artistic journey successfully into Key Stage 2.
