Curriculum

Intent

At Meadowhead Community Infant School and Nursery we believe that all children have a right to a broad and balanced curriculum with a strong focus on every child fulfilling their reading potential. For further information about individual subjects please see the tab to the right.

By doing this it is our intention that our curriculum

  • extends opportunity
  • raises aspiration
  • opens children’s eyes to the world beyond their immediate environment
  • enables children to live happy, healthy and productive lives
  • inspires children to be the best they can be
  • offers moments of joy
  • instils our school values of Ambition, Friendship, Kindness, Respect and Teamwork

Our curriculum focusses on the development of children’s knowledge and skill across all EYFS Areas of Learning and National Curriculum subjects with the aim of ensuring all pupils are ready for the next stage of their learning.

We have a rigorous approach for the teaching and learning of fundamental skills. Speaking and listening, phonics, reading, writing and maths skills are taught daily to enable our children to acquire the skills to access the wider curriculum and learn independently.

Phonics

We follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised as our systematic synthetic phonics programme. This scheme is followed with fidelity to ensure all children make excellent progress in their phonics and early reading. All classes have a daily phonics session where children learn the vital building blocks needed for successful reading and writing. Children’s progress is monitored closely and those children who are not making expected progress receive small group  or 1-1 interventions giving them the best chance to catch-up.

Reading

All our children have a daily reading practice session to enable them to reach their reading potential. We follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds structure to our reading practice lessons. All our reading books in school are phonetically decodable following the Collins Big Cat Phonics for Little Wandle Letters and Sounds revised scheme and are matched to the correct phonics phase for your child.

Once children are becoming fluent readers then a wider choice of books are used to improve children’s vocabulary.

Children’s reading progress in monitored closely and those children not making expected progress extra interventions as prescribed by Little Wandle are implemented.

Religious Education

We follow the Blackburn with Darwen Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2017-2022.

It teaches children about a variety of religions and provides an opportunity to learn about things that matter in the lives of local people and the wider world.

There is opportunity to visit different places of worship and share personal experiences and beliefs in class.
